Dec. 29th, 2002 08:14 amWork is weird- I've been gone for 4 days, and everything is exactly the same. The messages on the bulletin board, the decorations, and there was only 2 messages in my mailbox- almost unheard of. And the fog was solid-thick. I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone.
It's been a strangely quiet couple of days. A friend who we used to hang out with but had moved to the northwest came for a brief visit- he had many amusing anecdotes about life in Seattle. He was visiting his ex-wife, who happens to live a few blocks away from us, apparently. It was good to see them both. That was a couple of days ago- other than that, we've been hermity in the house, wanting to avoid post-Christmas insanity.
Except for hub doing a lot of calls at work, we haven't been out at all (well, I bought some fish, that was cool). Bean called us last night, but it was apparently accidental (nothing on the other line) and when we called back, she didn't answer. She and Bob have gotten really tight and we've seen hardly any of them for a couple of months now. Perhaps they'll resurface in the spring.
New Year's is coming up- no plans so far. We have an invite to a party, but haven't decided whether we want to go. Hub got next Friday off, so we're going to go visit Dad in Sweetwater over the weekend- I haven't seen him since he moved out there. I'm so glad he did- he was so angry and tense and unhappy living in Eagle Pass, for whatever reason. He called the other morning to chat. I wasn't kidding earlier when I said that he sounded so cheerful I actually didn't recognize his voice. I didn't. He was really surprised and amused when I was saying "Hi! Who are you again?"
He's decided he's sick of teaching at the über-Christian university where a student will run shrieking to the dean if he accidentally says 'damn' (and he was in the Navy- he literally swears like a sailor) and his wife Elaine's out of work because of a knee replacement and fibromyalgia. So both of them are settling into quiet retirement. I think Dad can handle it because he has a lot of friends there. But Elaine was always one of those lives-to-work kind of people, pulling 12-16 hour shifts on the maternity wards as an anesthesiologist up until just a few months ago. It will be interesting to see how she handles retirement.
