Another unpleasant dream; I went to a swimming pool, beautiful and blue and surrounded by trees in an apartment complex I was either living in or living nearby or visiting. It was a clear and sunny morning. I set up a laptop on the edge, and was having a grand time answering emails and chatting with friends while lounging in the pool. Something made me think I had to get out right away and go tell either hub or Bro something, so I ran back to home base and did that, completely forgetting about the laptop. So I convinced either hub or Bro to come back to the pool so I could pick up the laptop, hoping it hadn't been stolen. I remember thinking that the loss of the machine itself was a bummer, but it was the loss of all the data that was really going to hurt and that I would offer a reward for its return no questions asked.

So I get back to the pool, and it was cloudy and evening, and there were a bunch of people thrashing around, including a lot of kids. Luckily my laptop was still there [I have never owned a laptop, by the way] but a kid (about a 10 year old boy) had spotted it and was reaching for it. I ran over just as he started taping on the keyboard, yelling at him. He continued to try to type at the keyboard, even as I was holding it and trying to undo whatever he had started doing. No matter how much I told him to go away, or where I turned to avoid him, he was always there trying to fuck things up and interfering with my attempts to gather all the cords and speakers and whatall. Because my brain decided this was not difficult, it turned my computer into a board game (called Dragon, incidentally, a standard get your game piece from 'Go' to the finish line before the other guys do but with a lot of D&D type trappings, seemed like quite a fun game in my head at the time) with a million little dice and gamepieces. Annoying Boy was continually grabbing at the pieces and making a huge nuisance out of himself. I kept pushing him away physically, cursing at him, slapping his hand... finally, I pushed him under the water in the pool and held him there. I remember thinking 'I will only hold him under long enough to get my point across, not long enough to kill him. Surely everyone who's seen what a pain he's been will understand, and I won't get in trouble.' But he was unmoving bubbled air up through the water, and was unconscious, and I remember thinking 'uh-oh.'

Two things occur to me:
Annoying Boy was the Republican party. Really. I went to bed thinking about them, and in a lot of ways this dream fits my perceptions and feelings towards them.

Thing Two- even if that was the case, I'm glad I'm not going to be having any children.

Long weird day; I woke up, saw election results, went back to bed (after knowing husband Biblically before he took off to work), had odd dreams, woke up, watched Vampire Cop show, hub called- he has a flat tire. Drive to lovely snooty Westlake Hills area of town, call AAA, wait for towtruck, follow towtruck back to the north end of town to place that sells fancy-ass racecar tires hub's car has to take. Walk to Arby's, behave in criminally unvegetarian manner, walk back to tire place, pick up hub's car, come home.

Now what?

This is an Irish poem written in the 9th century. It is included in a book called "How the Irish Saved Civilization" by Thomas Cahill. The author gives an account of how Irish monks, scholars, and saints devoted their lives to copying religious and classical texts during the Dark Ages. He said that this is "perhaps the clearest picture we possess of what is was like to be a scribal scholar." (And also what is what like to have a cat there with you, too.)

--PANGUR BAN MY CAT AND I

I and Pangur Ban my cat,
'Tis a like task we are at;
Hunting mice is his delight,
Hunting words I sit all night.

'Tis a merry thing to see
At our tasks how glad are we...
When at home we sit and find
Entertainment to our mind...

So in peace our tasks we ply,
Pangur Ban my cat and I;
In our arts we find our bliss,
I have mine and he has his.
