Rock Band Cool Song of the Day 1 (RBCSotD)
"Cream and Bastards Rise" by Harvey Danger has that charming combination of being a bouncy song that has disturbing or depressing lyrics. Depressing, in this case, which is the hallmark of a good Smiths song- catchy and despondent at the same time. I like it! Stuff that sounds depressing and also has depressing lyrics is, well, too depressing. Pink Floyd's like that for me. I don't think I've run into any songs that sound depressing but actually have cheerful lyrics, unless it's a really schmaltzy love song along the lines of... pulling a song out of my ass... "With You I'm Born Again" by Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright. I suspect it's just easier in rock and pop music to sound upbeat than to be more serious, like how it's mostly all in 4-4. Just the tendency of the genre.
